The amount of sales tax charged is proportional to the value of the item bought. If the tax on a $110.00 item is $8.50, what's the tax on a $150.00 item?

Tax on 150 item= [tex] \frac{150*8.50}{110} [/tex]
= 11.59

This is really asking you to first find what percent $8.50 is of $110? And then find the same percent of $150. So, if you divide $110 by $8.50= 7.73. Then you can find the same percent of $150. 150 x 7.73= $11.59 or it can be done as shown above.
