And saucer be y

I.e

X+y= 3.10......equation 1

Cup which is X is $2 more than the saucer

I.e x=2+y......equation 2

Substitute for X in equation 1

(2+y)+y=3.10

2+2y=3.10

2y=3.10-2

2y=1.10

Y=1.10/2

Y=$0.55

Substitute for y in equation 2

X=2+y

X=2+0.55

X=$2.55

Therefore

The cup is $2.55

The saucer is $0.55
